Online

The duplicate license or ID Online service is available 24 hours a day. The cost is $17.50 and must be paid with a credit card. If your drivers license has been lost because of criminal activity, you can go in person and replace it free of charge. The following are the requirements for applying online:

  • You cannot make any changes to your current license (or ID), such as address change, name change or a change of license class (you cannot change to an enhanced version).
  • If you need to make an address change, please use the following : 
  • If you are twenty five (25) years of age or older, you cannot order your lost license (or ID) online if you have already done so once during the past two (2) years.
  • If you are under twenty five (25) years of age you cannot request a duplicate online more than one time.
  • Your twenty first (21st) birthday cannot be 40 days or less away.
  • Your current lost license (or ID) must not be expired or suspended.
  • You cannot have been issued a duplicate 30 days (or less) ago.
  • As a security measure, you will be asked to enter either your full Name OR your Client ID Number, birth date and gender.
  • You will also be asked to enter your Social Security Number (last 4 digits) and your zip code.  
  • You must have a valid email address (confirmation will be sent to this address electronically).

Your duplicate license (or ID) will be sent to the mailing address on file, and will arrive in the mail in two (2) weeks. Please remember that your physical card that arrives in the mail is the only legal proof of a valid drivers license or ID.

By Mail

The New York DMV can deliver your duplicate license or ID via regular U.S. postal mail or express mail.

Your first step is to download the Application For Driver License MV-44 form. Please be sure to check the top box that says Replacement. Your next step is to prepare a check or money order written to Commissioner of Motor Vehicles. The fee to replace a Drivers License is currently $17.50. The fee to replace an ID card is $8.00.

In Person

Please visit any new york dmv office. If your license or ID has been stolen or lost due to a crime, you will not be charged the $17.50 fee. However, criminal activity must be reported by filling out form MV-78B, which is only available at a police station. Bring a copy of this form. 

For all other lost licenses or ID cases, please show up in person with the Application For Driver License MV-44 form filled out. Also make sure to bring your Proof of Identification documents.
