Illinois Drivers License Name Change Information
Illinois makes it a requirement (by law) to notify the SOS (Secretary of State) of your new name. You have ten (10) days to do this.The following are the two different ways in which to process your name change.
In Person
Steps

Make sure to bring your current license (that has the old name). You will need to hand it in because you may not have two different licenses.

Prepare your Identification and name change documents (read below for details on the list of documents).

Locate and drive to a driver services facility in Illinois.

Bring payment to pay for the Cost of the name change. Look at the row titled "Corrected or Duplicate Driver's License".

Note: If you do not want to have a new license issued (with the new name), you can simply update your name without paying the fee. You will not receive a new updated license.
By Mail
Steps

Create a letter to the Illinois Driver Services. Make sure to include your old and new name. Also include your drivers license or ID number.

There is no cost to have your name updated.
This letter is sufficient to have your name officially updated with the Illinois Secretary of State. However, if you would like a new license with your new name, you will have to visit a driver services facility office in person, and request a new license. There is a cost to do this.

Documents Required
Privacy is very important to the Illinois Secretary of State. Therefore you will be required to show very specific items to order a new license reflecting your new name. You will need to bring:

Examples: Voided/Canceled check, credit or debit card, ID card, drivers license, court order, immigration forms .....

A document which shows Proof of Social Security Number.

Examples: Drivers license record (from Illinois), ID record, military record papers, Social Security Card, Military ID .....

A document which shows Proof of Illinois Residency.

Examples: A written statement (affidavit) which certifies your Illinois residency, bank statement, voided/canceled check, credit report (from one of the 3 major agencies), mortgage, or deed papers .......

You must also show documents which show proof of both your past name, and your new name.
