Oklahoma Drivers License Renewal Information

Expiration Date

Class D licenses in the Sooner State must be renewed every four (4) years. Unlike other states where licenses expire on your birth date, in Oklahoma your license will expire 4 years from the month in which your license was issued. It will be valid until the last day of the month. When in doubt, just double check your physical card as it will clearly state its expiration date.

Renewal Notice

The OK DPS will send electronic renewal notices to your email address on file. You should see the notice in your inbox forty five (45) days before your license expires. The DPS will not send out renewal notices via standard postal mail. In order for your email notice to arrive you must keep your address updated with the DPS database. To update your email address now, please use the following website. Note: Regardless of whether you receive the email or not, you must always renew on time.

When To Renew

You should renew your license before midnight of the day that it expires. However, waiting until the last minute is not the best approach. Oklahoma allows all drivers to renew up to one (1) year before it expires. In other words, if your license was issued on March 11, 2012 it will expire 4 years later on March 31st of 2016 (the last day of the month). You may begin the renewal process as early as March 01 of the year 2015 (1 year before). If you go past your expiration date, your license will not be considered active and will expire.

Expired Oklahoma License

It is illegal to drive with an expired license. There are several extra requirements that must be met if you are trying to renew a license that has expired for more than thirty (30) days. First of all, you will lose the privilege of applying via mail (in the event that you are outside the state of Oklahoma). By mail is only allowed for active licenses or licenses that have expired for less than 30 days. Your only option is to go in person because you will need to show a certified birth certificate. When going in person, you may visit your closest driver license exam station or a tag agent which accepts birth certificates.

Suspensions can occur if you commit major traffic violations or abuse your permissions. For instance, causing an accident while uninsured is grounds for suspension. You may also be arrested. You must always have minimum amount of insurance in Oklahoma. Use our auto insurance comparison shopper for the best rates. Drivers who are learning how to drive with permits can have their license suspended for operating electronic equipment while driving. DUI convictions will also results in your license being taken away.

In order to have your driving privileges returned following a suspension, you must serve your suspension period and follow through with the reinstatement procedure.
