Nebraska Drivers License Renewal Information
Expiration Date
The expiration date of your operator's license (Class O) expires on the date listed on your actual driver’s license. Your expiration date is based upon the age at which you were issued the license.
-
If you were either twenty one (21) years or older, your license will be valid for five (5) years.
-
If you were younger than twenty one (21) your license will have to be renewed on your twenty first (21st) birthday.
Your expiration date will always fall on your date of birth. Finally, please remember that you must carry your license on you, at all times while driving. It is illegal to drive without your license and you can be ticketed.
Renewal Notice
The NE DMV will mail you a friendly renewal notice reminder ninety (90) days before its expiration. However please remember that it is always your responsibility to renew on time, regardless of whether you have received the notice or not.
When To Renew
It’s best if you renew your driver’s license the date of, or before its expiration date. If you would like to prepare ahead of time, Nebraska will allow drivers who are older than twenty one (21) to renew their license ninety (90) days before its expiration. If you are younger than 21 you may only renew sixty (60) days before its expiration date (by law your new license will only be valid 10 days before your birthday). Do renew on time, as it will save you from having to retake the Written and Driving tests. If you are not in Nebraska (out of state) when your license expires, you will be given one (1) year to renew it. Please remember that it is against the law to drive with an expired license.
Expired Nebraska License
If your license is currently expired, do not drive. It will not be valid past the expiration date. You will be given a ticket for driving with an expired license. Try not to let your license expire for more than one (1) year or you will be required to retake both Driving and Written tests upon renewal. Driving without a valid license is against the law.
A suspended license holder will have to pay all required fees and go through the process of license reinstatement.
