Renewal Of Delaware Drivers License
Delaware License Expiration Dates
In the past, the expiration date of your license was set at five (5) years. However, beginning in the year 2012 the Delaware DMV began issuing licenses that are valid for eight (8) years. This will be a permanent change as of December 12, 2016. Finally, your expiration date will always fall on your date of birth!
Renewal Notice
The DMV will send you a renewal notice sixty (60) days before your birthday, to the address listed on your driving record file. That’s way it’s very important to always maintain a current address on file with the DMV. If you move and get a new address please make sure to follow the change of address instructions that we’ve prepared for you.
When To Renew
Try to renew your license on or before its expiration date. You may also prepare ahead of time, and apply for renewal 180 days or 6 months before it expires. If you fail to renew the license by its renewal date, you will be charged a late renewal fee of $1.15.
Renew Online
Delaware does not allow online renewing of your drivers license. However, you can prepare ahead of time and download your checklist by signing up HERE.
Renew By Mail
This option is only available to a select number of drivers who fall into a very specific category. It is only available for active duty military drivers or drivers who are Defense employees.
Renewal for Military Drivers
As mentioned, renewing by mail is an option if you are currently serving in the military. Additionally, Department of Defense contractors, civilian military employees and their family members can also take advantage of the renewal by mail option. Another benefit of falling into this category is that you will be waived the late renewal fee if you go past your driver’s license expiration date.
